Stock Market for Beginners: Where to Start

Stock Market for Beginners

Where to Start for a Beginner

The stock market seems complicated: charts, tickers, analysts. In fact, to get started, you only need to know a few basic principles. Let's break it down.

What is the stock market

The stock market is a place where securities are bought and sold: company shares, bonds, ETFs. The world's largest exchanges are NYSE and NASDAQ in the USA.

What can you buy

Stocks. A share in a company. It gives you the right to a portion of the profits (dividends) and price appreciation.

Bonds. Debt securities. A company or government borrows money from you at interest.

ETF. Exchange-traded fund. One security = hundreds or thousands of stocks at once.

REIT. Real Estate Investment Trusts. Investments in commercial real estate.

How trading works

Ticker. A short code for a company: AAPL (Apple), MSFT (Microsoft), TSLA (Tesla).

Quotation. The current share price. Changes in real-time.

Exchange. Where buyers and sellers meet. NYSE, NASDAQ, LSE.

Broker. The intermediary between you and the exchange. You place an order — the broker executes it.

How to start: 5 steps

  1. Determine the amount. Start with 100 somoni. Don't invest your last money.
  2. Open a brokerage account. Via an app or a licensed broker's website.
  3. Fund your account. In a convenient way: card, wallet, transfer.
  4. Buy your first security. ETF on the S&P 500 or a major company stock.
  5. Hold long-term. At least 1 year, preferably 5-10 years.

5 rules for beginners

1. Don't put everything into one security. Diversification reduces risk.

2. Don't panic during downturns. The market fluctuates daily. It's normal.

3. Reinvest dividends. Compound interest is a powerful growth engine.

4. Contribute regularly. 100-500 somoni monthly is more important than one-time contributions.

5. Think long-term. Time in the market matters more than market timing.

Common mistakes

  • Attempts to guess the "perfect time" to buy.
  • Investing all your money in one stock.
  • Trading with leverage.
  • Selling at the first signs of a downturn.
  • Investing your last money without a safety cushion.

How much can you earn

The historical return on the S&P 500 is 9-10% annually with dividend reinvestment. This is an average over 50+ years. In individual years, it can be -30% or +30%.

Example: $1,000 invested 30 years ago in the S&P 500 would be worth around $20,000 today (with dividend reinvestment).

Taxes

Profits from selling shares are taxed in most countries. Dividends too. Check the current rates in your country.
