OpenAI is an AI research lab and company dedicated to developing artificial intelligence in ways that "benefit all of humanity." Initially established as a non-profit organization, OpenAI was founded out of its creators' concerns about the potential misuse and catastrophic risks of AI in uncontrolled environments. OpenAI initially focused on developing AI and machine learning tools for various applications. Its first notable release was OpenAI Gym, an open-source toolkit designed for developing reinforcement learning algorithms. This project marked the beginning of OpenAI's broader AI research endeavors.
In 2018, OpenAI introduced the concept of the Generative Pre-trained Transformer (GPT), a neural network model inspired by the human brain and trained on extensive datasets. In 2021, OpenAI released DALL-E, an AI model that generates images from textual descriptions, akin to an image-based version of ChatGPT. November 2022 saw the release of ChatGPT, which quickly became the most popular chatbot and generative AI tool, capable of producing a wide range of outputs from conversational responses to survey questions and resumes.
