Ant Group (formerly Ant Financial Services) was founded in 2004 as a payment service under the name Alipay within Alibaba. It was comparable to PayPal. Alipay is the most popular digital payment app in China with a market share of over 55%.
Ant Group is building an ecosystem of digital services available to consumers and small businesses. Alipay had 1.3 billion users in 2021, and the company has a larger audience overseas than Paypal.
Alipay has partnerships in mobile payments and digital financial services around the world. Ant Group is working to transform itself into a financial holding company and intends to create a new consumer lending company.
Ant Group traces its roots back to Alipay, which was established in 2004 to create trust between online sellers and buyers. Over the years, Ant Group has grown to become one of the world's leading open Internet platforms.
